Sean, you have my full moral support (and my vote) on this.

Skype product management: If people complain that you're not really listening, then it's _exactly_ because of things like this. The original idea seems pretty simple and unambiguous to me ("a fundamental setting in earlier versions"). And then, after a few months(!), you deliver something that is well below the baseline. Which would be restoring the feature exactly as it was in earlier versions. Impressive, in a negative sense.

Please do an internal retro on what the heck went wrong here, and analyze carefully, to prevent these misunderstandings from happening in the future.
What led to this pretty reasonable feature request being implemented in such an incomplete manner? Was the request not translated into a well-defined user story? Who watered down the acceptance criteria? Is your engineering team scared of the system font dialog? Did someone, anyone, in the teams flag this, and suggest a proper implementation? If so, why were they ignored? Etc. etc.

I believe that gaining this understanding and learning the right lessons from it is key to being able to improve your product to actual benefit of its users. I have my own idea tagged with "Working on it", and I'm seriously scared of what might get released as a result. It's like asking for an orange (because the perfectly fine orange that you just held in your hand got taken away) and getting a rotten apple with a worm inside handed instead.

Just my two cents in case anyone at Skype is wondering why users are so upset. I don't know how I can be any clearer.

We work to make Skype work seamlessly on each of the platforms where it’s available. Please do share specific feedback on integration we may not have nailed yet. It push us to innovate, problem solve, and really understand your needs. We love this kind of feedback!

Petr, you may claim to love this kind of feedback, but I don't think you actually understand what the OP meant. A more specific comment addressing the OP's particular concerns would be highly appreciated.

Thank you all for the feedback. We are continuously working to improve the quality of Skype. Please feel free to report any crashes or performance issues on answers.microsoft.com including steps that lead to a crash so that the community can help troubleshoot the issue.

I am equally shocked by Petr's comment. Let the community troubleshoot? No, nothing good can come out of this attitude. The "community" can't do anything about shoddy programming, even if they tried. Microsoft should fix the CPU and memory issues in the first place.

This is very much needed. If the icon on the taskbar doesn't flash (even when Skype is minimized), messages will be missed. The system tray icon is NOT enough!

Hi everyone, thanks so much for this request. We have thought this through and due to other high priority engineering that the product needs we decided to prioritize other user-requested items for now. Please keep continue supporting this Idea and we will review it again later. I’ll let you know if anything changes.

Another example of the hubris of the current Skype designers, who think they can just redesign integral parts of the application without serious user resistance.

This is not about someone's "specific use case". It's about applying common sense and providing FLEXIBILITY. I just read Skillman's recent post on "simplicity" and well -- it's clear that they haven't learned a thing.

Flexibility >> Simplicity. And yes, you can have both.

We realize moving away from older versions of Skype is an inconvenience and we’re sorry for that. We wouldn’t be moving everyone forward if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. Watch this site for news about features we’re adding to the current version of Skype and reach out to @SkypeSupport on Twitter if you need help getting settled in the new app.

Thanks all for all the comments and votes around this topic.

Currently, if I want to install or upgrade(!) Skype 8, it automatically uninstalls Skype 7.
I can then install Skype 7 manually every single time, but that's just awfully annoying.

Do not uninstall Skype 7 when installing Skype 8!

If you ever want the community to give decent feedback for whatever improvements you may (hopefully) implement, you need competent people using your product. All such people have reverted to Skype 7 wherever possible.

To put it bluntly: I would like to occasionally check out Skype 8, to see if it has gotten better. But I won't, because it will kill my perfectly Skype 7 installation in the process. Stop that cr**!
Don't assume your users are too stupid to deal with two installations.

Definitely. I'd be more willing to try out any possible improvements of the "new" version, if I'm still able to use the proper Skype client productively.

We hear you. We love Skype version 7 too. We’re working to build the Skype experience you’ve come to depend on for so long on today’s platforms for today’s user. It would be impossible to bring back the full catalog of features available in previous versions of Skype all at once, our engineering systems just don’t work that way. We are committed to evolving the current Skype experience to match your needs over time. As we release new Skype features, we’ll update this site. You can also follow @Skype and @SkypeInsider on Twitter for the latest news too.
Thank you all for your feedback.

Thank you all for sharing your ideas! We have a lot of great feedback from you and we really appreciate it! We love the passion!
We used to categorize your submissions with lists of multiple requests, however we’re overwhelmed now. Going forward we will only accept submissions with single requests. It will help us to better prioritize which features we will work on next and understand what is most important for you.

Thanks for joining our community and helping improve Skype!
