Backlogged with all the other features Microsoft should have implemented and somehow forgot.

I don't have any trouble with my Skype name. Oh, that's right, I'm using Skype 7, not the piece of ... junk Skype 8 version. Looks like I made the right choice to wait and hang on to the working version.

"We are continuously working to improve the quality and functionality of Skype"

Apparently you haven't been paying attention. Skype 8 is lacking basic features already present in Skype 7. This is the exact opposite of "improve". Early reports were that Skype 8 was unstable, again the opposite of "quality and functionality".

We'll be waiting on the edge of our seats to see if anything changes; but we'll be waiting with Skype 7 on our workstations, not the Skype 8 horror.

We work to make Skype work seamlessly on each of the platforms where it’s available. Please do share specific feedback on integration we may not have nailed yet. It push us to innovate, problem solve, and really understand your needs. We love this kind of feedback!

Yeah, I bet it gives you a real chuckle to hear that customers expect new versions to actually have the same features as the previous version, plus some new features (that work).

Hi everyone, thanks so much for this request. We have thought this through and due to other high priority engineering that the product needs we decided to prioritize other user-requested items for now. Please keep continue supporting this Idea and we will review it again later. I’ll let you know if anything changes.

OOOHHHHH! A feature that's been in the product since day one has been added to the backlog. Don't we feel special that something this obviously needed is promised to (maybe) be restored as some point in the nebulous future; if Microsoft condescends to implement this absolutely necessary feature. Let's hope this is added before we are forced off the perfectly acceptable Skype 7 that already has the features we want and need. What a great idea (NOT)!

Thank you all for the feedback. We are continuously working to improve the quality of Skype. Please feel free to report any crashes or performance issues on answers.microsoft.com including steps that lead to a crash so that the community can help troubleshoot the issue.

No one likes Skype 8 and the web technology being foisted on us. Its slow, resource intensive, and very likely to drive customer's away. Everyone agrees that Skype 7 was a much better product with far fewer bugs and missing features. Dump Skype 8 and go back to the drawing board base on Skype 7 as a computer application, not a slow cumbersome web app.

We realize moving away from older versions of Skype is an inconvenience and we’re sorry for that. We wouldn’t be moving everyone forward if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. Watch this site for news about features we’re adding to the current version of Skype and reach out to @SkypeSupport on Twitter if you need help getting settled in the new app.

Thanks all for all the comments and votes around this topic.

Again, you just don't seem to get it. This isn't a matter of convenience, this is a matter of usability, or in the case of Skype 8, the lack thereof. Skype 8 is basically unusable for many of us and clearly not ready for release. We don't want to have to upgrade to cripple ware versions of Skype and hope that you'll get around to making it a usable product. We expect that a professional organization will produce a working product that isn't some kind of striped down version of a once great system.

I will not be upgrading to Skype 8 until it has all the features of Skype 7 and if that means Skype 7 expires before you get around to giving reasonable customer service, I will switch to a competing product and say good-bye to yet another Microsoft product. Eventually a lack of revenue may convince you to stop ignoring customers.

We hear you. We love Skype version 7 too. We’re working to build the Skype experience you’ve come to depend on for so long on today’s platforms for today’s user. It would be impossible to bring back the full catalog of features available in previous versions of Skype all at once, our engineering systems just don’t work that way. We are committed to evolving the current Skype experience to match your needs over time. As we release new Skype features, we’ll update this site. You can also follow @Skype and @SkypeInsider on Twitter for the latest news too.
Thank you all for your feedback.

Petr, I don't think you are hearing us. Withe each release of Skype since Microsoft has been in control there is a trend of fewer features reduced usability and with Skype 8 it has finally reached the point where the product just isn't worth using when compared to competing products.

There shouldn't be a questions of "bringing back" functionality, the functionality already existed in the code base. If your engineering systems can't support existing features the answer is change the system, not destroy the product. The arrogance of insisting on continuing to use an admittedly unworkable engineering system, over customer service, is typical of Microsoft.

I've tried the so called Upgrade being foisted on the Skype community. Version 8.x is a complete retrograde in terms of basic functionality. Ever since Microsoft bought this once great product, they've systematically stripped every useful feature out of the product. This latest version continues this ignoble tradition, further reducing the available features until the product becomes basically useless.

That's great in the mean time Microsoft is still trying to force us onto this excrement version of Skype. Get this product working, and then we'll consider updating. Otherwise, my Google Voice connection seems to be working just fine and I don't think I'll be needing Skype.

Thank you for your feedback. We already support some human interface device (HID) commands on our Universal Windows Platform Skype app. Our current support includes end call, mute/unmute your mic, and increase/decrease volume.
You can install our UWP app from the Windows Store app.
