Hi – We’d love more details about your experience here.

If you have Skype credits you do have the ability to send SMS by going to the profile of the person you want to SMS and choosing “Send SMS”.

You can also send an SMS to an arbitrary number from the dial pad by entering the phone number and selecting the SMS button to the left of the call button.

Additionally we are adding the ability to SMS via your Android phone with SMS Connect, which recently rolled out to insiders. Keep an eye out for this feature coming to all builds in the next few months.

Thank you for the feedback. We’re still working on enabling this capability. In the meantime you can right click on a message, click the “Select message” option and pick different messages to copy or forward.
    Thank you for your patience.

This is a very basic requirement.
You only want to see profile pictures if you're a social user (and maybe not even then).
If you're using Skype as a working tool to talk to colleagues you just want a plain list of contacts, showing the status of each contact - OnLine, Away, DND, OffLine etc.

We realize moving away from older versions of Skype is an inconvenience and we’re sorry for that. We wouldn’t be moving everyone forward if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. Watch this site for news about features we’re adding to the current version of Skype and reach out to @SkypeSupport on Twitter if you need help getting settled in the new app.

Thanks all for all the comments and votes around this topic.

We hear you. We love Skype version 7 too. We’re working to build the Skype experience you’ve come to depend on for so long on today’s platforms for today’s user. It would be impossible to bring back the full catalog of features available in previous versions of Skype all at once, our engineering systems just don’t work that way. We are committed to evolving the current Skype experience to match your needs over time. As we release new Skype features, we’ll update this site. You can also follow @Skype and @SkypeInsider on Twitter for the latest news too.
Thank you all for your feedback.

    "Your feedback is greatly appreciated!"
That sounds too much like a placeholder for "OK, let them whinge, it'll let them think we're actually listening."
The major requirement from most users is for Microsoft to maintain Skype7 for desktops and business users and let the smartphone users have their eye-candy and playpad version to have fun conversations with their social contacts.

Making it work across all platforms doesn't mean that the look & feel should be identical across all platforms. What is suitable for a touch-operated smartphone is not suitable for a keyboard-input laptop.
Maybe it needs two operational modes, 'Professional' with compct layout, minimal eye-candy and full configurability (Tools>Options etc) and 'Social' with Smartphone-type layout, pre-configured simple option selections and all the pretty stuff.
On the other hand, it would be simpler to maintain V7 as a professional version and develop V8 for social users.

If you have Microsoft Reward Points then maybe there should be an option to be able to use them as an alternative to Skype Credit, but it should not be forcibly replaced.
(Had a Microsoft account for many years, but never heard of reward points before.)

SMS via Skype is one of the areas we’re working on improving.

We’ve recently launched SMS Connect to Insiders which enables you to connect your Skype desktop client to your Android phone so that you can send and receive SMS from your phone on your Desktop.

    More info here – https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skype/forum/skype_insiderms-skype_insnewsms/skype-insider-preview-8307641-read-respond-to-your/896846ad-9701-4f1d-9dee-640d95442b8e

Skype also has the ability to send SMS messages to contacts if you have Skype credits.

Please let us know if there’s additional functionality you’re looking for in this area. Otherwise, stay tuned for SMS Connect arriving in the Release builds soon.

But please don't force a merge between Skype and Microsoft accounts, it should be an option.

If you primarily use Skype for business then you need to be able to keep your Skype contacts (and your profile picture!) separate from your social contacts and the profile picture you use on your Microsoft account.

We hear your feedback and are looking into options to make sure you can more easily access your history in Skype.

In the mean time you can use Export Chat History in settings to export your Skype 7 conversations on your computer. From there you can open the conversations in a browser and search using the browser search command.

Re "we should merge the accounts Skype and Microsoft".
You should be able to choose whether or not to merge Skype and Microsoft accounts, it should not be forced.
Some of us use Skype mainly for business and don't want all our personal address book contacts on Skype.
