Make Skype a full sms app that can replace or work along side a stock messaging app like WhatsApp does
Skype could be the best sms app but you need to allow it to especially work on phones and connect to a desktop PC via some web link. Google messenger and whatsapp both have this option why can't Microsoft allow this. Use Microsoft authenticator easy way better than a quarter code.
Skype has the potential but is slipping behind all the other apps because of the lack of this feature
Thanks for the feedback! I’m happy to say that we’re working on this feature request and it is making its way through our testing rings. I’ll keep you posted as it moves closer to release.
Since December 2018 working on it and testing?

Yes! Many Windows users would prefer to use Skype as their default messaging app on desktop and Android phones, but lack of SMS/RCS fallback makes this virtually impossible. Restoring this feature would also make it easier to encourage friends and family to use Skype to get the full functionality. They will scoff at this suggestion if it cuts them off from messaging all their other contacts via SMS (or soon RCS).
As an Office 365 subscriber, I'd be happy if I could at least use my 50 Skype minutes per month to enable SMS messaging via my Android phone. Sadly, this is currently not allowed.

Is there any update on this?
If you are going to do this, then support the RCS 1.x protocol as well. Most carriers are going to use it instead of plain old SMS.
Also I'd love to see Skype as the default phone app for android

Unclear to me if this person is asking that SMS messages be visible within the Skype app OR whether they want full SMS functionality to send AND receive SMS messages with Skype credits.
When you say that this is currently being tested, can you clarify which features specifically?
I'm most interested in knowing whether or not we will be able to receive SMS messages to our Skype numbers at any point in the future. If so - do you have a rough timeline? 1 year? 5 years?
Also would be good to include google chat RCS support so it can replace android messages
I agree with this. MS have alot of apps on android but yet to have an sms app. Skype doing this is kind of pointless on a phone to be fair as you are not going to use Skype credits to send an sms when you can use the stock messages app and send sms as part of your contract.
Make Skype able to replace a stock sms app and then suddenly the function is useful. It uses your mobile contracts messages allowances if you send messages to people without Skype, but if you want a conversation via Skype you can. It would be great to see both conversation types in the same feed with an icon indicating how you communicated.
Could you please connect which me
Totally would love to see this. Hangouts used to have the ability to replace the stock sms app and would allow you to send via your carrier rather than hangouts server but all. This would be a brilliant feature and increase Skype usage as people would more likely using the instant messaging side or calls if it was set alongside their carrier sms messages. Microsoft is about productivity and this would be a sure fire way to increase that side of communication.

The ability to set Skype as the default SMS on Android would send messages to whatever texting app the recipient uses. If the recipient uses Skype, the the message would be encrpted end-to-end using the Signal protocol, otherwise not.
it can. it does.

SMS support frome mobile operators into skype for android
What i did like with the old days with Hangouts was that i had support for both my Hangouts and Mobile SMS/MMS support into the app.
Today they removed it only like Facebook Messangers today some does support chat and mobile SMS/MMS support into the same app.
Would like to see Skype add the sypport for SMS/MMS into Android so i get all my messages into one singel app today i need to open Android Messangers for that, Skype for that, etc would like to see everything in on place.
Would never send a SMS frome skype becouse for $9 /m i get unlimit SMS/MMS/Calls and 4GB 4G Surf, its just cheaper that any Skype plans out there.
