Abandon the Swiss Design philosophy that was introduced in Windows 8
The industry trend of re-working applications using design philosophies meant for mobile devices has been a gigantic mistake that has completely ruined the desktop experience.
Skype is merely the latest casualty to this trend of so called 'modern' mobile-centric design.
Applications created with this philosophy removes features, reduces productivity, and introduces interfaces using flat design and minimalist concepts that are difficult to understand and annoying to work with.
If we've learned anything in the 6 years since the release of Windows 8 is that Desktop users want a Desktop experience. Metro and the design philosophies behind it have driven the industry in completely the wrong direction and now every software firm and their dog has embraced 'the new hotness' of Swiss design implementing these terrible interface concepts ramming them down the throats of users who want nothing to do with it.
Make applications native to PC, do not compromise the design and functionality of applications and operating systems to compensate for the limitations of Mobile devices. Instead concentrate on making Mobile devices better.
I typed a longer response elsewhere to this VERY issue. I don't have a smartphone, don't want one, and sure has heck don't want my expensive computer turned into one. The industry wide decontenting and crippling of once decent software is just horrid. Apple and Microsoft are both guilty. Windows 8 was a complete failure because of this. 10 at least works. Its as ugly has homemade sin, but it works.
Great words. It's like a desktop manifest, I completly agree with.

It's super strange to see Microsoft that failed on phones/tablets big time to still push for phone/tablet designs. :D Do they not understand that their only focus should be desktop where they still have some influence? Such morons earning billions. It's funny.
Amen to that

Yes! 100% this is the root of the problem. For example I don't need 50 pixels between each contact in my contact list in "Compact Mode"? Why? So I have to scroll constantly to find anyone....
