Put chat message area back on bottom. Not right/left side.
Right/left side chat is awkward/uncomfortable and reduces screen space. Put chat back on the bottom and underneath the screen area. 6.21 was the last version that did this. Whether it was a call, chat, or screenshare, big or small window, chat was always on bottom, underneath the screen. Or, at least, include an option allowing chat to be moved to this more user friendly position.
I agree this latest version of Skype with messaging on the side is horrible, it blocks the picture and is very bothersome. Please revise and give Skype users the option of where to place messaging.

There should be options for various layouts.

Thanks for the comment. To hopefully clarify, when the Skype window was maximised/full screen the message area remained on the bottom. Wasn’t necessary to resize the window smaller to move it there. For me, resizing the window to the size required for chat to shift to the bottom defeats the purpose because that resizing also reduces screen space. For me it’s about screen sharing. When another party is screen sharing with me the smaller the screen area the harder it is to see what they are trying to show me. Right/left hand side chat reduces screen area. Resizing window to the width required [narrow as you said] to shift chat to the bottom also reduces screen area.
6.21 was the last version to do this? I'm using 7.41 right now, and I have a chat window with the the message area at the bottom. Maybe you mean if not in compact mode. But 6.21 had the same modes (single-window view and compact), so I'm not really following you.
Even v8 does this for chat, if the window is narrow enough.
Maybe the key to what you're saying is "always," not just some of the time. We can agree on that. I'm not taking into account anything but chat above.
In a culture where reading is from left to right, having the chat to the right is counter intuitive, whereas the opposite is true for right to left reading cultures - so, there should be a choice
